The Stripper

Lila (Joanne Woodward) is a washed up would-be actress who is reduced to stripping in a tawdry traveling road show. Her sleazy promoter Ricky (Robert Webber) leaves her in a lonely town in Kansas and makes off with all her money. Her friend Helen (Claire Trevor) takes Lila into her home and off the streets where her 19 year old son Kenny (Richard Beymer) takes a liking to the older woman. He breaks up with girlfriend Miriam (Carol Lynley) and proposes marriage to the lonely Lila. Ricky comes back to town and talks the penniless Lila into becoming a stripper. Kenny can’t bear to see her bare in front of the gawking, slack-jawed yokels and desperately asks Lila to marry him once again. Lila must decide if the time has come whether or not she should hang up her G-string for good. Gypsy Rose Lee, Louis Nye and Michael Pollard add a touch of humor to this otherwise depressing tale. This was the final screen effort for writer-turned-producer Jerry Wald.
